Product quality alive and well: Submersible probe in action more than 25 years

A BD|SENSORS submersible probe dating back to the early days of the Thierstein family company proving its worth at the Köngen vegetable growing business 25 years later

When BD|SENSORS talks about “long service life” and “durable” they really mean what they say - not just talk, but everyday reality. This is especially true for products of the family business in Thierstein, such as the plastic submersible probe that has been measuring fill levels in a cistern of the Köngen vegetable growing business for a quarter of a century now.

The Gemüsebau Schäffer company from Köngen in Baden-Württemberg decided in 1993 already to use the LMP 808 submersible probe with panel meter PM 190 to monitor the fill level of their rainwater tank. The components, back then still designed and supplied under company name “Baumüller und Denndörfer GmbH”, reliably monitored fill levels and, in times of little rain, topped up cisterns for 25 years. It was late in 2018 only, when a short circuit on the digital display also damaged the submersible probe and this then had to be replaced – 25 years later. The rainwater tank was in the meantime fitted with the next model, also named LMP 808 but sporting several generations of further development and improvement.
Comments Rainer Denndörfer, co-founder of B+D GmbH and now CEO of BD|SENSORS: “Unbelievable, this service life of our probes – so long it is almost damaging to our business. The above story is also especially remarkable because, back then in 1993, B+D was the first and only company marketing these new plastic submersible probes. Our competitors were somewhat contemptuous about this at the SENSOR trade fair in Nuremberg. Probes like this have by now become global state of the art.”

The submersible probe is suited for the measurement of levels in water and waste water, also for fill levels in fuels and oils. The basic element is a piezo-resistive stainless steel sensor. This probe model differs from the original 1993 version in that the probe head is separable from its cable, enabling its replacement without requiring elaborate fitting. This considerably simplifies both maintenance and warehousing.
